Earlier this month, a federal judge in Maryland ordered a pause on construction of an immigration detentioncenter. With 1,800 beds, it's owned and operated by GEO Group, a private prison company that landed a federal contract to reopen the former prison in 2025. It's the only for-profit, private immigration detentioncenter in Michigan. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) told the Detroit Free Press on Feb. 16, 2026, it had purchased a building in Romulus, Michigan, where it plans to open a detentioncenter. The facility reopened in June as an immigration detentioncenter after rebranding as the North Lake Processing Center. It’s still run by Geo Group, one of the country’s largest operators of private prisons. It could hold up to 1,800 people.
