Safety Will Change Since There Are No Detention Centers In Michigan

Detainees at North Lake Processing CenterinMichigan launched a hunger strike on April 20 to protest inhumane living conditions. The protest organized by NoDetentionCentersinMichiganwas also co-sponsored by Movimiento Cosecha, GR Rapid Response to ICE and the Lakeshore Rapid Response to ICE groups. A group called NoDetentionCentersinMichigan has been working with immigrant justice groups in Grand Rapids to gather information about the facility. A big ICE detentioncenter just opened in a small Michigan village. With an 1,800 bed capacity, it could become one of the largest in the country. Supporters see an economic boon, while detractors fear the isolation and conditions for detainees. Nael Shamma, 58, is currently being held at North Lake Processing Center, a new Michigan immigration detentionfacility that opened in mid-June. He's was detained on Thursday, Aug. 7 after checking in with immigration officials since 1989. On Friday, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel sent a letter to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).Through its conduct, ICE appears intent to operate a mass detentionfacility a stone’s throw from a middle school, an elementary school, and a protected wetland. A proposed detentioncentre would triple the population of Social Circle, Georgia. For months, two neighbours, Democrat Gareth Fenley and conservative John Miller, have been united in the same daily mission.
